The Importance of Essential Fatty Acids

The Importance of Essential Fatty Acids

The word "fat" has a mostly negative reputation, but there are reasons to love fats. This is because the human body needs fat for proper function -- the key is knowing which kind(s) of fats to consume and how much. Fats are often divided into "good" and “bad” categories, but this can lead to oversimplification as too much of a "good" fat may lead to imbalances, just as too little of a "bad" fat.

The Need for Fat
The body uses fat to keep cells in optimum condition and manage energy properly. Many kinds of fats can be synthesized by the body as needed to perform specific functions. However, certain classes of fats that perform essential biological functions cannot be manufactured within the body and must be obtained from the diet. These fats are collectively referred to as essential fatty acids, or EFAs.

Specifically, omega-3 and omega-6 fats support the brain and the entire central nervous system, playing a role in the maintenance of cell membranes and neurological tissue. The most well-known of these are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Other important fats, such as gamma linolenic acid (GLA) may be conditionally essential if the body doesn't receive adequate precursors, or if metabolic pathways used to make them are impaired for other reasons.

EFAs also help with cell formation and will keep blood pressure within the desired range to help prevent a stroke, heart attack or heart disease. They also play a critical role in the regulation of pain and inflammation.

Physical Effects of Cutting Out Good Fats
While there are many good reasons to observe a "low-fat" diet, many people set out to accomplish this without understanding how much fat consumption that actually entails. According to dietary guidelines, a low-fat diet is one in which 20 to 30 percent of total calories come from fat. However, due to the widespread demonization of fat, as well as a lack of knowledge about the nutrient content of foods, many people unwittingly push that number much lower, with dietary fat percentages as low as 10 percent. This may contribute to certain health problems.

Symptoms associated with insufficiency of fat include the following:

  • Dry, brittle hair and skin
  • Poor memory
  • Changes in mood, depression
  • Confusion, possibly leading to dementia
  • Poor vision
Anyone who is noticing these symptoms should speak with their physician about their dietary habits and any supplements or medications they’re taking to determine if a deficiency is possible. As fat is also needed in order to absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) from food, it's possible that an ultra low-fat diet can lead to insufficiencies in these as well.

Getting the Right Fats Into the Daily Diet
As a general rule, plant-based unsaturated fats are the healthiest to consume. These are found in nuts, seeds, avocados and olives. Some research also suggests moderate amounts of coconut oil, an plant-based saturated fat can be healthful. Although not technically plants, or regularly eaten, algae are also a great source of healthy fats and are increasingly used as a source of these for dietary supplements.

Animal-based fats are typically the ones to minimize, although there are exceptions to this rule as well. In particular, fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines, contain significant amounts of EFAs, and are an important staple in parts of the world where plant-based fats are more difficult to come by.

On average, a balanced intake includes about 40 g of fat per day, although needs vary from person to person. This may be satisfied by consuming two to three servings of foods containing healthy fats every day. If these foods aren’t appealing or seem too difficult to consume regularly, they can be found in supplement form as well. Speak with a nutritionist or other medical professional to determine your own individual needs and the best dosage.

10 Meals of The Prophet of Muhammad SAW - His Sunnahs in eating!

With so many food around us all the time, we can be so tempted every time of a day! Be it raw, home cooked, cafe or street food, it is undeniable that the food industry is getting bigger each day. Food nowadays are often of fusion type and getting some real authentic dishes requires some extra effort. However as Muslims, we must first check the Halal status of the food we are about to indulge. Then, we should try to avoid some food that are halal but may be bad for our health. Or, show our love to Prophet Muhammad SAW by following his Sunnahs in eating!

1. Prophet Muhammad SAW didn't drink milk while he ate beef, chicken or fish
Nabi Muhammad SAW once cautioned his companions as not to mix fish and milk in a dish. This fact is actually proven by science where it was found that chicken contains positive ions while seafood or fish contains negative ions. When these two ions meet, they will create a biochemical reaction which can lead to stomach pain or ulcers.

2. Prophet Muhammad SAW forbids drinking milk with vinegar
Vinegar is acidic and slows down the rate of protein absorption in the intestines. Body growth can be stunt because of lack of protein

3. Avoid eating acidic fruits with milk.
For example, oranges or lemons. This is just the same as drinking milk with vinegar

4. Prophet Muhammad SAW ate fruits before having meals
Eat fruits at least half an hour before we have heavy meals. Fruits naturally are high in fibre. When we eat fruits before our meals, automatically our stomach will be full with fibre. Thus we eat less rice or grains, which if are not burned later will transform into fat.

5.  Prophet Muhammad SAW loved to eat cereals or grains such as Habbatus Sawda, barley and oats.
In a hadith narrate by Bukhari and Muslim, Prophet Muhammad SAW said:“Al-Habbah Al-Sawda’ is the cure for every disease except death”. Dietry based on cereals and grains are nutritious because they are high in phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are powerful antioxidants that increase the body's defense against viruses , good for the heart, prevents diabetes and obesity Al-Hakam Bin Uyainah said:“Rasulullah SAW won't sleep at night except after he has eaten Habbatus Sawda and honey. That is his practice every morning for energy, memorisation and to prevent asthma"

6. Prophet Muhammad SAW ate bread of whole grain wheat.
Whole grain wheat is different from processed wheat as it has a higher absorption rate of protein, fibre and a high volume of vitamin E which reduces risks of heart related diseases and cholestrol level in the body. In a riwayat by Abu Daud, Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam ra,“I saw Rasulullah SAW took a piece of whole grain bread and he put a date on it, then he ate it" In a riwayat by Bukhari and Muslim, Aisyah ra said," The prophet's family was never satiate themselves by eating wholegrain bread two days in a row. In days where they can't obtain bread, they ate dates"

7. Dates
Famously synonym with the Arabs, dates are very goo's for the human health. Their high fibre content and low in fat as well as many other nutrients are well loved by people for its sweet and creamy taste. Dates are considered super food because they contain carbohydrate, protein, fibre, fat and iron (which is very rare in a fruit) Bukhari dan Muslim reported that Aisyah RA said,“Sometimes the stove in our house doesn't smoke for a month (they did not cook anything). All that we had were dates, water and other people gave us beef"

8. Prophet Muhammad SAW also ate other fruits such as watermelons
Abu Daud dan Tirmizi reported that AIsyah RA once said , “Rasulullah ate watermelon with rattab (wet dates).”
Watermelon contains 92 percent water and 8 percent sugar as well as antioxidants. The antioxidant or specifically, lycopene are proven by researchers can prevent cancer.

9. Allah's Apostle loved cucumber.
Cucumbers are water rich, making it a great body coolant. Besides that, they are rich in vitamin C which are good for our skin and also contains silica. Silica is an important element to maintain the wellness of our tendons, ligaments and bones.

10.  Prophet Muhammad SAW drank plenty of water
He drank slowly, while holding the glass with his right hand. He also forbids breathing in or exhaling out from the water. Drink water before having meals. If possible, avoid drinking while eating to smoothed the digestion process.

Makanan sunnah ganti vitamin?

NABI Muhammad SAW bersabda: “Perut adalah tempat bermula pelbagai penyakit”. (Hadis Riwayat Muslim).

Perlu tahu kandungan makanan

The Benefits Of Royal Jelly

Fertility Super Food – Royal Jelly

Fertility Super Food – Royal Jelly

While there are a number of different “superfoods” that have proven to be highly effective at helping with fertility, Royal Jelly is more than likely the reigning King…or Queen of the bunch. This nutrient dense substance is a secretion that comes from glands in young worker bees, and is used to not only create a queen bee for procreation, but is also fed to honey bee larvae to provide them with optimal health and growth. Royal Jelly is rich in amino acids, lipids, sugars, vitamins, and most importantly, proteins. It contains high levels of vitamins D and E, and also has ample levels of iron and calcium. As all of these are essential to proper health and organ function, it is very easy to see how Royal Jelly can help with in assisting with fertility.

Royal Jelly

Royal Jelly is a substance that is secreted by nurse worker bees glands. The secretion is known as royal jelly and it is the main food source for the first 3 days of the larva. One larva that is to be the Queen Bee is fed only royal jelly its entire life. This exclusive feeding triggers the full development of her ovaries which is needed to lay the millions of eggs she will lay in her lifetime. The Queen matures in 5 days and weighs double that of a worker bee. A worker bee only lives to be 30-45 days old, but the Queen bee lives to be 5 to 6 years old. The queen also lays in one season around 250,000 eggs and in peak season she may lay up to 2000 eggs a day. This may have something to do with the extremely high nutritional content of the Royal Jelly which is this Queen’s exclusive diet.

Royal Jelly is rich in amino acids (29 to be exact), lipids, sugars, some vitamins, fatty acids and most importantly, proteins. It contains ample levels of iron and calcium. Royal Jelly also contains acetylcholine, which is needed to transmit nerve messages from cell to cell. Regular consumption of high-quality Royal Jelly has been shown to help balance hormones. This makes it beneficial to those individuals that suffer from a hormonal imbalance, as it helps to provide support to the endocrine system. It may also help with problems that are related to hormonal imbalance. A study done in Japan and published in 2007 shows that Royal Jelly has the propensity to mimic human estrogen, which may help those that suffer from low estrogen levels. Estrogen is essential for healthy bone formation and healthy gene expression, and is vital for a healthy menstrual cycle. This study also showed potential for increased size of uterine cells in the rats studied. While there may need to be more studies done to show full potential of Royal Jelly consumption on uterine health this is exciting potential for women with weak uterine muscles or thin uterine lining due to long-term hormonal birth control use.

Royal Jelly may be beneficial for the following:
  • To increase libido
  • Support egg and sperm health
  • Diminish and reduce the signs of aging
  • To reduce inflammation caused by illness or injury
  • To naturally boost the body’s immune system

Making Informed Decisions When Choosing Bee Products

Be sure that you are choosing high quality products from a reputable source. This is very important not only to you, but to the health of the bees. As you may well know bees are rapidly declining and much of this is thought to be linked to environmental pollution. Choose to support organic, free-range, biodynamic farming and bee keeping practices when possible. Your choices make a difference! Take the time to learn more about bees and how the sustain our food chain, without them we might perish. There are some great documentaries out there on Colony Collapse Disorder, the lives of bees and how they are on the brink of total collapse. Please keep in mind their vital role in our daily lives! Our Natural Fertility Shop carries a premium choice of Royal Jelly which is pure Royal Jelly freeze dried to maintain quality. We also carry Alive Bee Power which contains a wonderful blend of these 3 bee products as well as some immune boosting herbs. This company has been certified organic since 1995.

Important Caution

It is extremely important to note that if you are allergic to bees or honey you should avoid all bee products. Side affects and reactions can include minor to severe skin irritations, difficulty breathing or even anaphylactic shock. If you begin to develop a reaction to any of these products discontinue use immediately. Do not feed to infants under 1 year of age. Do not use bee products during pregnancy if either side of your family or the father’s family has a history of bee allergy as this may affect the baby.

Honey and nuts fight cholesterol

Honey and nuts fight cholesterol
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/2203073.stm

The foods could reduce heart disease risk
People aiming to lower their cholesterol should turn to honey and almonds as well as fruits and vegetables, scientists say. Two separate studies suggest the foods could be beneficial because both help lower cholesterol.
Researchers discovered honey contained as many antioxidants - which combat the free radicals which can damage cells - as spinach, apples, oranges or strawberries.

Honey could be included in a diet, but I don't think it's ever going to replace fruit and vegetables
Dr Wendy Doyle, British Dietetic Association
The scientists from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign say honey appears to have a "mild protective effect". It was already known that honey contained varying levels of antioxidants, with dark honey having more than light.
But this is the first study to examine honey's effect on human blood.

Protection
In the study, researchers checked the blood of 25 men aged 18 - 68 over five weeks.
They found drinking four tablespoons of honey mixed into a 16-ounce glass of water improved the antioxidant levels in their blood.
The team is currently conducting a study on rabbits to see if honey could slow atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.
But researchers say honey cannot replace fruits and vegetables in a heart-healthy diet.
Dr Nicki Engeseth, who led the study which was presented to the American Chemical Society, said: "It looks like honey is having a mild protective effect."

Cholesterol levels
In a second study, published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, Canadian researchers showed eating almonds lowered cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of heart disease.
Although the theory that eating nuts could reduce a person's heart disease risk had been mooted before, their calorie content meant people trying to control their diets were not advised to eat them.
But the research by doctors at St Michael's Hospital Toronto, funded by The Almond Board of California and the Canadian government found diets including almonds reduced levels of "bad" cholesterol.
Almonds, like other nuts, contain "healthy" unsaturated fats.
Twenty-seven men and women with high cholesterol and an average age of 64, were studied over three months.
For the first month, patients ate a full dose of almonds (74 grams), which was just under a quarter of their total daily caloric intake.
In the second month, they ate a half dose each day.
In the last month, they ate a low-saturated fat, whole-wheat muffin each day. which had around the same amount of calories, protein and saturated and polyunsaturated fats.
After eating the full portion diet, patients levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad" cholesterol) fell by about 9.4%, and after the half-portion diet by 4.4%.
Cholesterol levels did not fall significantly during the month patients ate the muffins.
Alice Lichtenstein, vice-chair of the American Heart Association's nutrition committee, said: "This study suggests that replacing carbohydrates with monounsaturated fat - within the context of a diet that is low in saturated, trans fat and cholesterol - favourably affects cholesterol levels and cardiovascular risk."

Balanced diet
But Dr Wendy Doyle of the British Dietetic Association warned both honey and almonds would only be beneficial as part of a healthy balanced diet.
She told BBC News Online: "Honey is OK, but fruit and vegetables contain a wide range if other health benefits.
"They are low in fat, low in calories and high in fibre. Honey contains fructose, which is not good for your teeth.
"It could be included in a diet, but I don't think it's ever going to replace fruit and vegetables."
Dr Doyle added that it was known that almonds, along with other nuts contained healthy fats, but that they were also high in calories - 612 per 100 grammes.

The Benefits Of Olive

Ibn al-Qayyim described the benefits of olive oil in his Prophetic Medicine. He said that the characteristics of olive oil corresponded to the type of olives from which it came from; oil pressed fr
om ripe olives was the better than oil from unripe olives. He also said that the older the oil, the more effective it was, and when olive oil was more beneficial when it was pressed with water.

Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned that all types of olive oil could soften the skin and delay whitening of the hair. He also said that the benefits of olive oil were many times greater than have been mentioned.

He gave some Prophetic Hadith on the benefits of using olive oil:

The Messenger (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) said: "Eat olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it is from a blessed tree." (Tirmidhi At'ima, 43)

And also:

"Eat olive oil with your bread, and oil yourselves with it, for it is from a blessed tree." (Ibn Maja, At'ima, 34)

Olive and olive oil Facts

Olives are the fruits that grow on the olive tree, which comes from the Oleaceae family. They contain a single pit and their flesh is filled with oil. The ripe fruits are pressed to extract the oil.

Green and black olives are essentially the same olive and only vary in the degree of ripeness- black being the most ripe.

Olive oil consists of 75% heart-healthy monounsaturated fat and only 13% saturated fat. It contains active compounds such as oleocanthal, which has a strong anti-inflammatory action to fight heart-disease and cancer. It also contains the natural antioxidants polyphenols, whose beneficial effects include lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and the risk of coronary heart disease. Many other nut and seed oils have no polyphenols whatsoever.

high blood pressure

Olive oil Facts

For the highest antioxidant content, choose extra-virgin or virgin olive oil- these are the least processed forms.

Extra-virgin comes from the first pressing of the olives and has a superior taste.

Virgin olive oil is obtained by pressing the crushed fruit in bags and removing the oil. It has a greenish tint and has a stronger taste than virgin olive oil.

Olive oils with labels such as 'refined oil' 'pomace olive oil' or 'light oil' should be avoided as they are not always 100% olive oil. Pomace is the ground flesh and pits after pressing.

Use olive oil for low-temperature cooking. The particles in the oil will burn at higher temperatures, thus burning off the many health benefits.

Store your olive oil away from heat and light to maintain phytochemical content.

Olives

The olive, a sign of peace and friendship throughout the world, is described in the Holy Qur'an in Surat At-Teen.

Found extensively in Asia minor, Palestine, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, Italy, North Africa, Algeria, Tunisia, the state of California in America, Mexico, Peru and southern Australia, the olive plant stretches up to three meters in height. Its leaves are bright green and very attractive; and its fruits are bright bluish or violet in color. Although olives consumed straight from the plant are very nutritious, they are not usually eaten due to their metallic taste. A pickled version is consumed largely in Europe. Olives are preserved in vinegar and imported from Spain, Italy, France, Turkey and Greece, and are favored in Europe and Arab countries. Olive oil is a good preservative for other foods such as sardines and other fish.

The use of olives goes back to ancient times. Vessels full of olive oil have been found, among other articles, during the excavation of ancient Egyptian graves. According to the scholars of Hadith, when the Great Flood subsided, the first thing to be seen on the earth was an olive tree.

According to Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah, Sayyid Al-Ansari narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said, "Eat olive oil and massage it over your bodies since it is a holy (mubarak) tree."

According to Ibn Al-Juzi, Zanbi, Alqama Ibn Amir narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said, "There is olive oil for you; eat it, massage it over your body, since it is effective for hemorrhoids." Basoor reported that Aqba Ibn Amir narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) stated, "You have the olive oil from this Holy (mubarak) tree; treat yourself with this, since it cures the anal fissure." Abu Na'im reported that Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) stated, "Eat the olive oil and apply it (locally), since there is cure for seventy diseases in it, [and] one of them is leprosy."

 Composition:

Olive oil has a place in pharmacology in the U.S.A. and Britain. Both of these countries have attributed prime importance to olive oil in the treatment of various ailments, and have fixed standard parameters to evaluate its purity.

It contains palmatic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, steanic acid, myristic acid and glycerides. In this case, it is not dissolved in water but in alcohol, ether, chloroform and liquid paraffin.
The adulterant very often used in the olive oils found on the market is the seeds of the tea plant, arachis oil. Sometimes machine gun oil and refined machine oil are also found in it.
