Backhousia citriodora - Lemon Myrtle is a native Australian tree growing naturally from Brisbane to Rockhampton in a range of altitudes from 50 to over 800 m above sea level. The Sunshine Coast and Proserpine area are identified as main areas of natural strands.

Backhousia citriodora was named by Baron Ferdinand von Müller in 1853 after James Backhouse (1794-1869), an English nurseryman and keen botany collector. Backhouse was an early Quaker missionary who visited Australia in 1832-8, making observations of Australian flora and fauna as well as writing about Australian society at the time.

In 1889 Joseph H. Maiden reported the potential use of Lemon Myrtle for commercial production and Schimmel & Co analysed the species in 1888 for chemical properties identifying citral for the first time.

Lemon Myrtle is reputed to have a ‘sweet’ citral fragrance and taste. Other ‘lemony’ essential oils come from citrus (3-10% citral), lemon grass (75%), the tropical Verbena (74%), the Lemon Scented Tea Tree (80%) and the Lemon Myrtle, (90-97% citral).

Early last century Lemon Myrtle was used in Australia as a source of citral rich essential oil for lemon flavouring, but it was later replaced by other ‘lemony’ essential oils. By 1990 lemon myrtle was rediscovered as a potential new crop.

When the Heat Is On: How to Avoid Heat Stroke

When the Heat Is On: How to Avoid Heat Stroke

Image result for heat stroke precautions

Picture your ideal summer day. Do you see yourself soaking up the sun with a drink in hand? Or maybe playing a game of soccer on a humid day? Just be careful. Overexposure to hot weather can put your body at risk for heat exhaustion or a more serious condition called heat stroke.

Vigorous exercise or exposure to extreme heat or humidity can inhibit your body's ability to cool itself effectively. This can result in heat stroke, a dangerous condition that can cause brain damage and death. But you don't have to forgo the sun to avoid heat stroke. Instead, take a few precautions.

What Is Heat Stroke?

The body is normally very effective at cooling itself. You lose some heat through your skin by sweating. However, when you become dehydrated, your body is unable to produce enough sweat to cool itself. As a result, your body temperature can rise to 104 degrees or higher and heat stroke can strike. If heat exhaustion is not treated, it can lead to heat stroke.

Know the symptoms:

  •     headache
  •     dizziness
  •     confusion, agitation, or disorientation
  •     feeling sluggish or fatigued
  •     hot, dry skin that is flushed but not sweaty
  •     an extremely high temperature
  •     loss of consciousness
  •     rapid heart beat
  •     hallucinations
  •     vomiting

What Should You Do if You Think You or Someone You're with Has Heat Stroke?

If you think you or someone you know has heat stroke, call 9-1-1. It's important to get help right away. While you're waiting for emergency personnel to arrive, get the person out of the heat and have them lie down with their feet elevated in a cool area. Remove or loosen tight clothing and apply ice packs to the groin and armpits. You may also apply water and fan the person, which may induce sweating.

Medical personnel may need to administer intravenous fluids to rehydrate and balance electrolytes. The person will need to rest and their body may have trouble regulating its temperature for a few weeks.

If you think you have heat stroke, don't hesitate to call for medical help. Waiting to see if you get better can result in a dangerous situation. Though you may want to shrug it off, consider whether or not you'd call for help if someone you love was experiencing the same symptoms. You deserve to treat your health with the same seriousness.

How Can You Avoid Heat Stroke?

By taking a few extra precautions, you can still enjoy the sun. The next time you hit the beach, remember these tips:

  • Wear lightweight clothes. Loose, light-colored clothing so you won't absorb so much of the sun's rays.
  • Carry an umbrella. Carry an umbrella, or top your outfit with a hat, to protect yourself from the sun's rays.
  • Drink up. Bring plenty of water or a sports drink, which can replace sodium lost from sweating.
  • Avoid caffeine. Avoid or limit drinks with caffeine or alcohol, as they can cause dehydration. Remember, if your urine is dark yellow, you're probably not drinking enough liquids.
  • Plan around peak hours. If you plan to exercise or work in the sun, be sure to do it in the cooler part of the day, before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. Alternately, take it easy on hot days.

The Efficacy of Mulberry Leaf

Mulberry Leaves

The Efficacy of Mulberry Leaf

Mulberry leaves have long been used in Chinese medicine for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. They contain compounds that suppress high blood sugar levels.

Mulberry combats Arterial Plaque

Scientists in Japan have discovered that the extracts of the mulberry leaves are effective in suppressing the progression of atherosclerosis, that is the buildup of cholesterol-rich plaque in the arteries. The biologically active compounds (isoquercitrin [contains the well known antioxidant flavonoid quercetin in its molecular structure] and astragalin) in the extract have the ability to inhibit the oxidation of LDL (low density lipoprotein) which is a major factor in the development of atherosclerotic plaque.

Mulberry Fights Diabetes

Mulberry leaves have long been used in Chinese medicine for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. As you might have known, diabetes would heighten the risks for atherosclerosis and cataracts. This is caused by diabetic condition that heightens the oxidative stress and the diet that gives rise to shortages of antioxidants in the blood and interstitial fluid. The clinical efficacy of lipoic acid supports the oxidative stress theory.

Mulberry Controls Blood Sugar

The mulberry leaves contain compounds that mimic the effects of insulin, such as MHCP (methylhydroxychalcone polymer) that gives the cinnamon with its power to control the blood sugar levels. Not only that, there are compounds in the mulberry leaves that are able to inhibit the action of intestinal enzymes (alpha-glucosidases) whose function is to metabolize disaccharides (sucrose, maltose and lactose) into monosaccharides (glucose, fructose and galactose) that can pass through intestinal walls into bloodstream. Needless to say, the inhibition of these intestinal enzymes has the stabilizing effect on the blood sugar levels.

Mulberry Protects Blood Cell Membranes

Based on studies, the antioxidants contained in the mulberry leaves could retard the excessive lipid peroxidation of the diabetic patients’ erythrocyte membranes, thus reducing the levels of lipid peroxides in the blood plasma and urine. The lipid peroxidation is normally heightened in diabetic patients as the plasmic levels of antioxidants are usually lower in them.

Other effects

Based on the research in the Chinese remedies, I further discovered that the mublerry leaves have the following benefits:
  1. Antiaging: this is due to the richness in Isoflavonids
  2. Removal of liver spots and acne problems
  3. Improve the texture and lustre of hair
  4. Reduce the menopausal syndrome
  5. Detox & Slimming
  6. Improve bowel movements
  7. Hidroschesis: stopping the excessive perspiration
