Ingredients:

1 cup of apple cider vinegar
1 cup of organic unpasteurized honey
    10 garlic cloves

Preparation:

In a blender, add all ingredients and blend them until the mixture becomes thick (normally it takes about 60-90 seconds). Transfer the mixture to a jar and store it in the refrigerator.

The mix is ideal for consumption 5 days after the preparation. If you drink it any time after this period, the remedy is fine, but the healing benefits are lower.

In case you do not fancy the natural taste of the remedy, you can combine it with a cup of water or a fresh juice of your choosing. Eating in Light of the Sunnah | Food for the Mind and Soul

Image result for Eating in Light of the Sunnah

With Ramadhan coming up, now more than ever we need to be aware of the important sunnahs around eating and drinking. No doubt, if you are fortunate enough to have family and friends around for iftar the food and drink will be flowing inshaAllah. But don’t think just because the fast is over for the day, that you’re goal of attaining good deeds is done until suhoor.

Here are some the sunnahs of eating and drinking!

Wash Your Hands Before You Start Eating

As hungry as we’ll all be, it’s important to wash your hands before you start eating. Not only is this part of the sunnah, it’s general hygiene. And as you will see, you’ll be eating with your hands so you’ll want them to be clean.

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “The blessings in the meal is by washing before and after it.” [Abu Dawud]

Make Du’a on Breaking Your Fast and Say “Bismillah” Before Eating

Even before we have taken the first sip of water, we should say the following du’a:

“The thirst has gone and the veins are quenched, and reward is confirmed, if Allaah wills” – Thahabadh-dhama’u wabtallatil-‘urooqu, wa thabatal-ajru inshaa-Allaahu. In Ramadhan, and for the rest of the year, it’s important to remember that any sustenance that comes to us, has only come to by the permission of Allah swt. He swt is Ar-Rizzaq (The Sustainer).

Eat with the Right Hand and with 3 Fingers

Now, I know how this may seem strange especially if you’re used to eating with a knife and fork. I myself did not take too well to this concept of eating with my hands but over the years I have gotten used to it alhamdulillah. It really does help to build a relationship with your food and curbs over-eating as you can only pick up 3 fingers worth of food at a time.

“When any one of you eats, let him eat with his right hand, and when he drinks, let him drink with his right hand, because the Shaytaan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand.” [Muslim]

Eat From What is Directly Infront of You

In the UK especially, the hours of fasting are long and warm. I personally have never exerienced a Ramadhan in the winter so I know nothing but the long summer fasts alhamdulillah. But one thing is certain, when it’s time to break your fast you are HUNGRY. But, we should only take from the food that is infront of us as according to the hadith of the Prophet (saw) in which He (saw) said “O young boy, say Bismillaah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is directly in front of you.” [Bukhari & Muslim]

Pray for Your Host

There is great reward in providing food to a person and that reward is increased when that person has been fasting. Whether it is your husband, children, family members, friends or even a homeless person on the street sharing food during Ramadhan is a noble task alhamdulillah. Cooking for a group of people can be stressful during Ramadhan so keeping your host in mind is beneficial.

The Prophet (saw) made this du’a for Sa’d ibn Ubaadah who brought him a simple meal of bread and oil. “May fasting people break their fast with you, may the righteous eat your food, and may the angels send blessings upon you.”

The 3 Second Rule in Islam – Eating Food That’s Dropped

I’m sure we’ve all heard of the 3 or 5 second rule from when we were younger but I’m sure you never knew about it in relation to the sunnah. It’s easy to take for granted the food that we have in Ramadhan. Every grain of rice, every vegetable, every morself of meat is a blessing from Allah swt and we should all strive to remember that.

“If any one of you drops a piece of food, let him remove any dirt from it and eat it, and not leave it for the Shaytaan.” [Muslim]

Lick Your Fingers When Your Finished and Clean the Plate

“Whenever the Messenger of Allah (saw) ate food, he would lick his three fingers.” [Muslim]

“You do not know in which portion the blessing lies.” [Muslim]

In some cultures, this may be seen as disrespectful or bad manners but in Islam it’s part of the sunnah. Remember though, this is the sunnah AFTER you’ve finished eating, don’t be a double dipper and lick your fingers and then go in for a second taste. Islam praises good hygiene!

And remember to clean the plate! The same rule applies, you don’t know where the blessing is, that knowledge is only with Allah swt. Cleaning your plate also lets the host know that they’re a really good cook mashaAllah.

After You’ve Finished Eating

So you’ve come to the end of your meal, alhamdulillah. Allah swt has provided you with sustenance to go ahead and pray Tarawih with energy but the sunnah doesn’t stop, it’s a guide to life!

When you’ve taken your last bite say “Alhamdulillah” or follow the hadith in which the Prophet (saw) used to say, “Al-hamdu Lillaahi hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubaarakan fihi ghayra makfiyyin wa laa muwadda’in wa laa mustaghnan ‘anhu rabbana (Praise be to Allaah, much good and blessed praise. O our Lord, You are not in need of anyone, and we cannot do without Your favour nor dispense with it).” [Bukhari]

These are some of the sunnahs of eating. If there’s anymore you’d like to add leave a comment below inshaAllah.

Super Foods for Ramadan

Super Foods For Ramadan

By Umme Faatimah (B.Dietetics Univ. of Pretoria) | 08 July 2013

 sunnah foods

The modern world has swept us off our feet in so many ways… our
dressing, our lifestyles and most noticeably our eating habits. We
have so casually adapted the western culture of unhealthy eating,
moving further and further away from the Noble teachings of the Quraan
and Sunnah of The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him).

Yet, the newest nutritional research continues to discover the
benefits of certain foods, labelled as “Super Foods”. They have
also unravelled the great benefits of certain eating habits, such as
washing the hands before and after meals, eating with the hands, not
drinking with meals…just to mention a few. However, all of this has
already been outlined in the Holy Qur’an and Sunnah more than 1400
years ago.

We are certainly the losers if we do not make an effort to practice
upon the Sunnah in our homes and kitchens. What better time to bring
about these changes than now? Our beautiful Deen offers us the
opportunity during the beautiful month of Ramadhaan, to bring about
positive changes in our lives- changes that benefit us mentally,
physically and spiritually which Insha Allah (Allah Willing) can be
sustained for the future.

Physically, fasting gives the digestive system a much needed rest.
Energy normally used for digestion is now directed to body
detoxification, tissue repair and system healing.

With that in mind I have chosen to highlight just a few of the
favourite foods of our The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon
him). With the special month of Ramadhaan fast approaching, we can all
ensure we have these foods on our shopping lists. InshaAllah, by us
adopting the lifestyle of The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon
him) we will be rewarded enormously… Ameen.

DATES

Dates are the most mentioned fruit in the Quraan. They are high in
energy, fibre, iron, vitamins and minerals. The Noble Messenger of
Allah (Peace be upon him)said: “ The home with no dates is like the
home with no food”.(Hadith- Sahih Muslim)

The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him)used to break his fast
with fresh dates and a few sips of water. If he did not find fresh
dates, he would use dried dates. He (pbuh) said: “When one of you
breaks the fast let him do so with dates, for they are a blessing and
if he cannot find dates then with water for it is a purification”
(Hadith-Tirmidhi)

He often consumed dates with cucumber, butter, cream or bread. A
dessert called “Haisa” made with ghee (butter), dates, cheese and
yoghurt was also prepared.

Tips: At iftaar (breaking fast) time, dates can also be used to
prepare date milkshakes, date chutney, date desserts as well as
sprinkled over salads. For sehri (pre-dawn meal), dates can be used as
a softened spread over bread or added into muffins, rusks etc.

OLIVE OIL

Dieticians and nutritionist the world over have been advocating the
use of olive oil for its excellent cardio-protective, anti-oxidant and
anti-inflammatory effects. Ongoing research is revealing more and more
great benefits on the consumption and application of olive oil.

The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him)said: “Eat the olive
and use it as an ointment as it comes from a blessed
tree”.(Hadith-Tirmidhi)

Tips: During Ramadhaan, olive oil is best used raw as a dip for breads
or as a salad dressing. The lighter olive oils are well suited for
cooking and baking purposes. Whole olives can be added to salads as
well as de-pitted and added to breads, muffins, pies and pizzas.

BARLEY

A recent Readers Digest article highlighted barley as one of the five
healthiest foods we tend not to eat. Yet it was barley that was one of
the staple foods in the diet of our The Noble Messenger of Allah
(Peace be upon him). Modern research is discovering that barley has a
very high soluble- fibre content. This helps to keep the arteries
clear and healthy. It has an extremely low glycaemic index (GI), which
means it takes a longer time to digest, keeping one fuller for longer.

It is mentioned that The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him)
consumed barley in the following ways:

SAWIQ – a coarse broth prepared from ground wheat and barley – very
much like a haleem (soup)

THARID – Barley bread covered in gravy cooked with meat

TALBEENAH – A porridge prepared using barley and milk

A Hadith in Mishkaat narrates that The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace
be upon him)never used sifted flour in his lifetime. We should take
lesson from this, as we are all moving to consuming more refined and
processed foods where all the beneficial nutrients have been stripped
off. Allah SWT mentions in the Holy Quraan grains with their husks,
amongst His many gifts to us. Un-sifted flour as used by The Noble
Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him)contains all the valuable
nutrients found in the bran and germ layers and has a lower GI.

Tips: During Ramadhaan, barley can be added to soups and broths or
prepared as a drink by boiling and straining mixture. A hadith in
Bukhari mentions that The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him)
consumed “Sawiq” at iftaar. Barley flour can be used for preparing
breads and rotis. Substitute 1.5 cups barley flour for every 3 cups
regular flour. Cereals containing barley flakes like muesli can be
purchased, or barley flakes can be added to biscuits, muffins, breads
and other cereals.

Barley can be prepared as a filling porridge for sehri -Talbeenah.
Soak 1-2 tablespoons whole barley overnight in a flask filled with
rapidly boiling water. At sehri time, strain water out and prepare
porridge with honey and milk. (Store bought “pearled barley” has
been polished with some of the bran layer removed).

HONEY

Modern research has been abuzz with the myriad of health benefits
associated with honey- anti-inflammatory, immune boosting, energising
tonic….to name a few.Our beautiful Deen has encouraged the use of
honey 1400 years ago. The Holy Quraan mentions“there comes forth
from the bee’s belly, a drink of varying colours, wherin is a
healing for men”.(Qur’an 16:68-69)

The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) further said “ Make
use of two cures- honey and the Quraan”(Hadith-Ibn Majah)

The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) loved drinks that
were sweet and cold and often consumed honey water.

Tips: Honey can be used to sweeten items like tea, fresh juices, milk
drinks and cereals etc. Raw honey which is thicker and creamier has a
lower GI, and can be mixed with cinnamon and used as a spread on toast
for sehri.

GRAPES AND RAISINS

Grapes have been found to contain resveratrol- a powerful antioxidant
that protects the body on a cellular level from damage. The seeds are
rich in flavonoids which lower the risk of fatty plaque accumulation
on the lining of blood vessels to the heart.

The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) loved eating grapes.
Hadith in Abu Dawood mentions The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be
upon him )often consumed a drink “Nabeez”- prepared from soaked
raisins. Nabeez can be prepared by soaking raisins after Esha
(evening) prayer in clean water covered with a plate. The following
morning the water can be drunk and the soaked fruit eaten or just use
the blender to obtain a beautiful cloudy Nabeez. And, if you soak in
the morning, drink in the evening. Nabeez should be consumed within
twelve hours of soaking to prevent fermentation.

Tips: Nabeez or fresh grape juice can be prepared as a drink after
Taraweeh (evening prayer in Ramadaan). Grapes can be served as part of
salad or dessert. Raisins eaten with nuts can be enjoyed as a healthy
munch after taraweeh salaat.

The Sunnah way of eating is the healthy way of eating. InshaAllah, let
us all strive to revive and bring alive the Sunnahs of The Noble
Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) in our homes this Ramadhaan. I
have highlighted just a few. Make an intention to eat on the floor,
share eating utensils and to fill a third of your stomach with water,
a third with food and a third left for air.

Besides the immense health benefits outlined above our greatest
rewards really lie in following the Sunnah, as it comes in Hadith
mentioned by The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him):

“ The person who follows my Sunnah is the one who truly loves me,
and will be with me in Jannah” (Hadith-Tirmidhi)

Allah Ta’ala said to His Messenger (pbuh)“Say (to mankind), if
you love Allah, follow me – Allah will love you and forgive your
sins.” (Qur’an:3: 31)

Wishing you all healthy eating, the Sunnah
way………………….Ramadhaan Mubarak!

Cancer Doctor Explains How Cooking with Turmeric Leads to Amazing Health Benefits

Cancer Doctor Explains How Cooking with Turmeric Leads to Amazing Health Benefits

Digested through every day meals turmeric gives excellent results. Medical oncologist Dr. Saraswati Sukumar  explains how you may get the most out of turmeric. This conclusion comes after laboratory studies on mice and people who tried it out.

 medium_Turmeric-In-Wooden-Bowl

Scientific facts about curcumin

Curcumin is a diarylheptanoid. It is the principal curcuminoid of turmeric, which is a member of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). Turmeric’s other two curcuminoids are desmethoxycurcumin and bis-desmethoxycurcumin. The curcuminoids are natural phenols responsible for the orange-yellow color of turmeric.

Daily doses over a 3-month period of up to 12 grams are considered to be safe. However, several studies of curcumin efficacy and safety revealed poor absorption and low bioavailability.
Curcumin has effect  on various diseases, including multiple myeloma, pancreatic cancer, myelodysplastic syndromes, colon cancer, psoriasis, arthritis, major depressive disorder and Alzheimer’s disease.

The power of cooking with turmeric

Dr. Sukumar who is a cancer doctor says that she has acquired some experience on how to use surcumin and get the most of it, because as she claims she uses it a lot in her daily meal routine. She uses it daily in her kitchen and has built a good portion of her professional reputation on touting the benefits of this powerful herbaceous perennial plant.

“The health benefits are many, many. For example, for those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, those who have painful swelling in the knees, or those who suffer from diabetes turmeric is a great way to suppress the inflammation,” says Dr. Sukumar for A Woman’s Journey. “We have close to 300 publications (that cite turmeric) for its anti-cancer effects.

In addition she says – “Many diseases, such as colon cancer and other types of cancer, are being traced to inflammation. So, curcumin not only regulates inflammation which leads to certain types of cancer, but also cures certain types of cancer”.

Natural News stated that curcumin actually seeks out malignant cancer cells and alters the regulation of DNA in order to kill them. Dr. Sukumar also points out that you can get the most of this amazing herb by adding spices to he cooked dishes.

“The problem with the pill is that it is very insoluble in water,” said Dr. Sukumar. “The better way to take it, I feel, is to use it in your cooking very extensively. If you have any sauté, just sprinkle it in. The moment you heat oil and add turmeric to it, it becomes completely bio-available to you.”

Lucky, turmeric has great taste. It tastes great with all kinds of veggies, meat and anything else that you would like to cook. It has a mellow, smoky flavor despite its bright-yellow color. Dr. Sukumar says she uses as little as ¼ to ½  teaspoon in her cooking, depending on the dish. But there is nothing wrong with using more of it in intensely flavored dishes like curry.

Here are 2 simple recipes with turmeric to rev up your metabolism and reduce cancer risk.
1. Sprouted Lentil Veggie Burger Recipe (dairy-free):
